spammers

Postby tim » Mon Feb 20, 2006 12:00 pm

Due to a little bit of spam (the first so far) I've decided to increase the security on posting. This means that if you want to POST, for most forums you'll have to register as a user and log in - no more logging in as "guest".

Reading and browsing are still open to all.

Sorry if this causes inconveniences. If it does bother people, or make life awkward let me know and I'll try and arrange something else.

I'm sure some of you have noticed the recent wave of spam posts -
I've been trying to keep on top of it, but obviously the set-up isn't as secure as I'd hoped. I'll try and improve things when I get back next week, but until then there may be a few more slipping through. Please ignore them.

(If I have accidentally deleted any bona fide posts, please accept my apologies. Thses are the only times where I feel the need to delete/moderate any posts).

I regularly scan new user registrations to see if they aren't suspicious (many thanks to those members who point suspects out to us :) )

It's a constant battle, but if you ever find your user ID has dissapeard it's because either...
    a) I suspected it of being dodgy and banned it, or
    b) I made a cock-up.
If you think I've made a mistake , you'll have to re-register and please let me know as well so I don't delete you a second time.

I hope that no bonafide members will be inconvenienced. Spammers can go to hell.

This all goes for me too.
If anyone has deleted or does delete a bonafide post, bear in mind that it might not have been Tim

Spammers can go to hell.

But please don't use alpine roads to get there. Take the M25

I've installed a change to the forum which should bake it more difficult for spambots to register, and a bit more effort for "live" spammers. Fingers crossed.
I'm sure a few will still slip through, but I'm off for 10 days next week and won't be able to delete them, so please just ignore the barstewards and I'll clear up when I get back.
