Google Map for St. Moritz area

Postby tim » Sat Jun 06, 2009 6:48 am

... I've just made the GoogleMaps version of the St. Moritz page live,
http://www.alpineroads.com/engadin.php as a sort of beta

I know that the map moves when a marker is clicked, and the pop-ups are a bit big. I'll get around to fixing these later, but otherwise I welcome any comments/criticisms.

It is possible to isolate each route and display it with the write-up below. What do you all think? Shall I try it for the routes on that page there? The main "problem" will be how to display routes that are diagonal.... the resultant map will take up a big square.

Looks good to me, though I'm barely able to use a computer.

It looks like the map needs to be larger to accommodate the pop-up
my resolution 1280x800

Yes, yours seems to act like mine does, so that's the next on my list... make the popup smaller. Maybe it'll fit then, and the individual maps might need tweaking.

I?m running 1680 * 1050 and can only follow Bourne?s conclusion. The popups need to get smaller.. and/or the map need to get larger.

Otherwise.. brilliant initiative !!

Hi Tim,
A good new feature but have to agree that pop ups swamp the map. Thanks for all the good work.

Hi Tim,

Only just noticed this thread. Good work.

If you click the tiny st.moritz link imediately below your small Google Map you're presented with a much larger map which will expand to full screen size with a list of Passes on the LHS. Clicking on these Pass links identifies them on the map - which is just what you want. The downside is this action takes the user out of AlpineRoads website - maybe you could look at forcing it to open in an additional seperate window which would be more useful.

Generally this is a great improvement on your previous maps as you can zoom and pan around the Google map to see surrounding areas.

All you need to do now is take a month off work and get the whole site sorted!

Yes, that popping out to Google.maps is a bit of a pain.
"I'll have to think about it"

Les (Fahrside) has been a great help. In fact, it was mostly because of him that this is getting done. =D> Showed me patiently how to do it, and made about half of the new maps himself.
We do have most of (but not all) the maps ready, but I wanted feedback on "Beta" page before hand. So when I edit the pages to include the new maps I don't have to redo them all again and again :?

In case anyone's wondering, I have been working on a few more maps. In reality most of them have been drawn, but I'm not ready to publish them as I'm being hindered by the "intelligent" Google habit of splitting up maps into ones with fewer objects on them  -- and it's not really possible (with my knowledge of the system) to tell Google to not do it or how to divide everything up the way I want it without resorting to redrawing everything on 2 or more maps per region.

That means it'll take a while until I get time to find a solution.
