Michelin maps - Which scale?

Postby Sigmund Freud » Sat Feb 11, 2012 9:15 am

I`m looking to update some of my maps for my summer Alps & corsica trip.
However I can`t decide which scale I should get for the east & south East of france for RN & RGA, and I`m torn between using the regional maps # 519, 520, 523, 527 (ie: 1:200,000) or the equivelent local maps # 321, 333, 334, 341 (ie:1:150,000). My question is, what the general consensus of the members on which scale to use for those areas. Bearing in mine that I have already mapped out my route using mapsource, and the new maps will be my backup to view in the tankbag map pocket, and I already have the "local" michelin map for corsica

Nothing with less data than 1:200,000, IMHO

Depends what you are using them for
routing needs less detail and a wider view
finding a dirt track like some of our dirtier friends crave then a fine scale map is called for
if you need to get to your destination, find a fuel station, hospital, hotel or restaurant then then take a GPS and stop messing about with bits of paper
cue lots of arguments from technophobes

I have both the Local's and the Regional's, and I'm using them both. Never leave home (on a long trip I mean) without them, even with a Garmin in front of me

Regional's are good for a global view, but I couldn't do without the Local's, found most of the unpaved tracks in the French with the use of these maps.

As I already sorted my routing out for my trip on Mapsource and have posted it elsewhere on this forum, the new maps are as you put it "to get to your destination, find a fuel station, hospital, hotel or restaurant" but also I`m acutely aware of mapsources limitations, and the GPS`s ability to take you where you didn`t want to go, just when you don`t need it to, leaving you helpless if you don`t have a back up map. However a little research has also highlighted that some of the map versions available for sale are more than several years old, some dated 2004, which probably means some roads, and road changes may not be on them. As much as I prefer Michelin maps, I may be open to suggestions for alternative maps of the routes (RN & RGA) that are more up to date, and more importantly ........ accurate

You can always go to :
http://www.viamichelin.fr/
and print off specific sections in whatever scale you want .
evt with , IMO useless info like hotels , restaurants , speed cameras , etc ..
Finding gasstations with help of GPS can be even counterproductive , while many stations in smaller locations don't accept credit cards , and no GPS will tell you that . Try this on a sunday , and you could find yourself in big trouble ..

Ludwig,
Many thanks for the Michelin link. Much easier to fit A4 size of relevant section into tank top map pocket than folded full map and easier than scanning / printing to get A4.

Thanks to everyone for the advice, & to Chris f for the link :)
I finally decided on, and ordered the 4 regional maps # 519, 520, 523, 527 which arrived yesturday.
I have an idea to scan/print off certain sections of my new maps, and maybe some from the online maps that include the route, then cut the A4 sheets down to 145mm x 280mm in size, then place 2 adjacent map sections back to back and laminate them & trim them, so they fit in the window of my tankbag, I can then highlight the route externally (as they`re laminated), and also wipe the highlight pen off and amend it as required, scanning the maps will negate the need to cut up my new maps
