Pre-booking hotels in the Salzburg, St. Moritz, and Andermat

Postby shawn » Thu Jul 06, 2006 6:14 am

Hello there, great site here, lots of good info. I'm planning my last minute trip through the Alps at the end of July, 1st part of August. I know this will be peak season, and I'm wondering if I need to pre-book hotels in the Salzburg, then St. Moritz, and finally Andermatt regions. I plan on a couple of nights in each place to use as a base. Any advice :?: Is it hard to find hotels, guest houses, B & B's at the last minute :?:

I read in some other posts that it's also a lot of fun to wing it, which I'm up for, but would be bummed if the whole area was booked and I didn't bring camping gear

Vielen Dank :!:

The Salzburg Festtage (a theatre/opera festival) starts on the 23rd July, so if you're looking directly in and around S'burg it could well be full, and treble the price - so I'd seriously pre-book there. However, I'd suggest somewhere a bit further away, westwards say Zell am See, Kaprun, Saalfelden; or eastwards say Gosau, ..anywhere on the lakes (Bad Ischl, Bad Ausssee, Gmunden, Mondsee, St. Wolfgang) depending on which roads you're likely to be riding. Consider tiddly little places like Werfen (with its castle Hohenwerfen). Most towns and villages will have a couple of B&Bs or private rooms - all you need then is a place with a restaurant & bar.

Andermatt is pretty small but there are a fair number of private B&Bs in the village. If Andermatt is full, don't forget to try Realp, further up the valley.

I've never stayed in St. Moritz - only in Silvaplana once (bring a gold credit card), and even off-peak Silvaplana was not easy, you may want to consider pre-booking there if you want to be sure of getting an affordable room.

Personally I always just wing it. Sometimes it can mean trying a few places before you get lucky, but mostly it works out ok. You can get some nice little surprises too that way. As Mark suggested on another thread, it's not a bad idea to try and find a room early, say mid afternoon. Before the late arrivals turn up. Then you can dump the luggage and go out for the rest of the day's ride, with no worries about being back too late. It can also provide a way of avoiding the mid-afternoon thunderstorms. :(

Tim, thanks for the reply and info. I'm liking the sound of just winging it, finding a place a little earlier during the day, and riding lighter in the evenings. Makes for even more adventure, if that's possible.

The more I read the posts here the more exciting it gets... really appreciate the help.

I wouldn't know because I'm always there till mid July at the latest before all of Europe goes on vacation...but...

I've stayed at the Gasthof-Hotel H?lle in Salzburg. A nice hotel with nice rooms and a great breakfast. After a ?5 motorcyclist discount (the owner has a Harley), I paid ?54 per night with breakfast in 2005. And if you want to head into town without the bike and gear, the #5 bus will run you in, in about 5 minutes.

In Andermatt, I've stayed at Haus Caprino (B&B) twice. It is on the Oberalp road at Oberalpstrasse 39, +41 41 8871549. The owners don't speak English...how is your German?

I can't help you with St. Moritz, but I did all the passes in that area while I stayed (twice) at the Hotel Aurora in Chiavenna. It is at the foot of the Spl?gen Pass. Going towards the Maloja Pass will take you to the following passes: Albula, Julier, Ofen and Fl?ela and if you head south from St. Moritz, you can take in the Bernina Pass, Stilfserjoch and Umbrail Pass which will take you back over the Ofenpass. The Gavia and others are nearby as well.
