Chalet Kammleitn
Watschig 40 9620 Hermagor
Carinthia
Austria

A great location, ?Giving you three countries within a few kilometres... Breakfast in Italy, lunch in Slovenia, dinner in Austria ? all in one day? - Watschig is in the region of K?rnten (Carinthia). Debbie and Spencer can provide you with a free copy of a bikers? touring map with 21 routes of varying difficulty and length, including lots of great passes if haven?t already planned your trip. We chose the ?half board ?option as we thought after a day riding the passes, it would be nice to get back to the chalet and enjoy a meal and a drink or two without worrying about riding back.

Dinner was very good and the portions were more than adequate ? and we are not skinny! Breakfast is cereal, yoghurt, bread, croissant, sliced meats, cheese, fruit etc. so you won?t go hungry then either - all this for a very reasonable price of EUR 37.00 per person per night (May 2009). You can just have B&B but as there isn?t anywhere to eat in staggering distance you will probably want to eat before returning to the chalet.

Nice big rooms with plenty of space for all you gear, laundry service available, bike washing facilities, games room, lounge with TV and bar, plenty of parking and two fantastic hosts. The chalet has only been open for 18 months ? they already have a good winter trade but are keen to expand their summer season and as bikers we were made very welcome.

Hi Ballast,
do you have conections with the chalet? My apologies for the delay in the email, but it got stuck in my spam filter :-)
It's a nice corner of Austria. And it looks like a good place for skiing too, though I've not been there.

I did send a PM to Tim but he suggested that I should make my reply available to all...

We have no connection with this chalet - we found it on www.bike-stay.net but we contacted them direct via email at their own website. It looked to be in a good location and we were suffering from AR info overload - too mamy passes to choose from - we decided it should make an excellent place for a base. We had hoped to ride on the Millennium Express - the longest cablecar ride in Europe - as it is only 6km up the road and it would have made a nice rest day but (in May) it was closed for annual maintenance.

I gather that some chalet owners can be a bit snooty - please be assured Debbie and Spencer are NOT. They welcome suggections for improvements, especially any that would be of particular interest to bikers.

Being a chalet there is no menu, but the meal is different every night (up to 14 days) it is 3 course with a glass of wine and followed by coffee. Although there is no "choice" the food is very good and I am sure that provided your requirements are reasonable and made at the time you book, they would try their best to oblige.

The chalet is not in town so perhaps not the best place if you are touring alone as you might find it a bit quiet unless there are a bunch of other bikers staying there at the same time - or maybe you like the quiet.

We enjoyed our stay very much - why carry all that camping gear when you can have a real bed and ensuite bathroom at such an affordable price. All the passes we did were open, the weather was lovely even in May and riding up to the snow line was great - and surprisingly not cold!!!

That doesn't sound very Austrian.

Well spotted - they are Brits - is that a problem? Their nationality was not part of our booking decision.

There are a surprising number of Brits running B&B etc. in Austria. Or people with close British relatives. It's quite nice sometimes as you can often get a decent cup of tea. Something that's difficult to find otherwise, except at my house. :-)
