GPS / digital photo utility?

Postby tim » Mon Jun 15, 2009 1:32 am

There's a little PC programme somewhere that allows you to match up the digital photos (using the timestamp in the photo) and the position on a GPS track, so when you plot the track you took, the position of the photos is marked on it.
I think it also allows you to update the photo with the GPS co-ordinates as well?

Anyway, I once had such a prog. on my PC but it's gone now. Does anyone know what it's called, or a similar product? Ideally it should read Magellan track data, but I can convert if needed.

You see, and I'm sure a lot of you will understand... when you're out riding, and taking photos, the roads sort of tend to blur together, and I want to not have to remember where everything was.

That would be handy, after last years trip I had to go through 300 pics, looking at the timestamp then trying to work out where I was using Google Earth, enter the lat/long into EXIF data and a comment.
However Garmin Mapsource will upload a track from my Nuvi, then export it to GE, whats missing is entering that position in the photo data.

Robophoto

I'm playing with a Nikon Coolpix P6000 this year. Built-in GPS.

The main problem appears to be synch time - If I'm just pausing to grab a quick shot, it may not get a positional fix. I could leave it on and in satellite acquisition mode, but would have to hard-wire it to the bike's electrical system (it does a number on battery life in that mode).

QSTARZ Platinum geotagger

We bought one of these for our trip in May - yes I still haven't posted the trip - I must do it soon. We were very pleased with it (cost about ?70.00) although as a completely independent device you can use it with any camera. The link below to a video review (if it works) will probably give you a better idea of what it is and how it works than I can.

The other fun thing is that when you get back from your ride, if you got lost you can find out exactly where you were :D :D :D

I've got three (count 'em) of these widgets.

In descending order of preference:

#3 - ATP Photo Finder. Its claim to fame was that you didn't need a PC - just take the SD card from your camera, stuff it in the slot and it would automagically append the geo data to the files' EXIF data. I never got it to work reliably.

#2 - Holux M-241. Needs a PC an attaches via USB. Newer models do Bluetooth, too. Works fairly well. Non-backlit LCD screen can be almost impossible to read, depending on light conditions. Looks like a stretched 35mm film can. Cool.

#1 - Sony GPS-CS1. Works like a charm. Like the Holux, it needs a PC with USB for data transfer. Also provides separately visible track data. Absolutely intuitive user interface.

Of course, one needs to pack a supply of batteries - typically one AA sized battery per day.

If anyone's interested in the ATP or Holux, let me know. I may even be able to find the software for them.

I often create a simple Waypoint on my Garmin SatNav to remind me of where some obscure photo locations are. Then review the TrackLog in Mapsource whilst viewing the photos on PC.

Wash your hands first.

And after.

I wouldn't touch that with a ten foot Pole - or even a tall Czech.

(my apologies in advance to the non native English speakers in the audience (and some of the native English speakers, too))

I agree, if you're not prepared to pay for software don't expect it to come gift-wrapped

BTW, the software package I use for my everyday job cost me ?12,000+vat for a single user, plus an annual update fee of ?2k ! - but the single disc did arrive in a nice box
