Parking in central salzburg?

Postby Harlequin » Wed May 30, 2012 7:27 am

Hi all. I am a newbie on the site, but I am looking forward to joining in on the forum.

To kick off, I have a question regarding motorcycle parking in Salzburg. I am staying for a couple of nights in a central Salzburg hotel at the back end of June (following a circuitous trip up from Nice, via Italy, Switzerland, Italy [again] and Germany :-D ) I am staying with some non-biking friends, so I don't really have much flexibility regarding choice of hotel. The hotel does not provide motorcycle parking, so I am trying to find out what it's like to park a motorcycle in central Salzburg - that is to say, where, security, etc? Has anyone any thoughts / suggestions?

Cheers.

Are your friends amenable to changing to a hotel that does provide secure bike parking?

Does the hotel have any parking?

Give the Salzburg Tourist Office a ring 0043662 88987-0

Thanks for the responses.

I have tried lots of hotels in the centre and either they have no parking, or they have parking but not for motorcycles, or they might have parking, but cannot guarantee it until I arrive. So, just thinking through my plan B - being if I can park in a public area in the centre. I have zipped an email to the tourist office to see what they say - thanks for the suggestion. Plan C is for me to stay out of town.

Salzburg is pretty safe. Look where other bikes are parked and do what they do.
A lock is always a good idea though. There may be some special bike-parking markings on the sides of the road - you can park there for as long as you want for free. Blue zones are short-term parking and for cars there is a charge, but not for bikes. The blue zones are typically only valid until from about 8:00 to 18:00 (it varies on area) outside this valid zone you can park as long as you want. But I've never had trouble parking (not in Salzburg though) in the blue zones for hours on end. The thing you must do is to park diagonally, and try not to take up too much space - the traffic wardens won't bother you then.

Otherwise, as Ali suggested, the Tourist Office is your best bet. You can be sure they'll speak English.

I find this to be an interesting thread.

While motorcycle theft is not unknown here in the Colonies, it doesn't seem to be as pervasive as it does in Europe - or at least the concern here is much less.

Unless I'm at a hotel in a very bad part of town (not very likely), it isn't even a concern. If I'm feeling a bit antsy, I'll put the disk lock on, but usually just leave it with the forks locked.

Maybe it's because we're all armed :?:

In most of Austria, I wouldn't bat an eyelid leaving the bike on the street. Italy and the UK are a different kettle of fish.

Math quiz!

If Karza can ride it in 40 minutes, how long will it take the average rider?

Time begins... Now.

We've just built a dedicated Biker Garage for our guests even though we have zero crime in Ramsau.

1 hr from Salzburg

Heard back from the tourist office. For other travelers visiting central Salzburg, who are looking for free motorcycle parking, you can find it here.

Rot-Kreuz-Parkplatz,
Franz Josef Kai, 5020,
Salzburg

Cheers for all the helpful responses.
