Some high mountainpasses which I can't seem to locate...

Postby Torque » Tue Dec 16, 2008 3:51 am

So, I've bought the Motoplus (bikers mag) and they've listed the 100 highest reachable points in the Alps.

Since I allready have a (small) database of al the passes I've done, I started cobining both lists. The fact is than, about 70% of the highest passes in the Alps are off-road, some doable like the Assietta, some hardly doable on a GS (Via del Sale), so you can imaging that most of these highlights are hard to find on any map.

I've located the most of them, exept the following ones, anyone a idea????

Colletto Battagliola, Italy, near Punta Cavallo, 2248 m,
Col de Toi, Dolomites, near Passo di Sella, 2246 m,
Grosser Oscheniksee, Austria, K?rnten, 2390 m,
Colle del Baracun, Italy, Piemonte, near Bobbio P?llice, 2373 m,

Since I havent completed the list, there may be more to come

I got the mag .
( bedankt voor de tip , Philip ! )
It is a bit sobering to find out that after 30+ years of alpine riding I only did about 30 % of the list !
But then , many seem to be one way dirt roads .
From the gravel roads I only did Someiller . ( Umbrail doesn't count )
Anyway , I'll scrutinize the list a bit closer to see what is do-able with a road bike and try to get as close to 50% as I can .

Here's a couple that I located quite by accident that don't seem to be on any of the major Pass lists. I stumbled across these two last year while in transit to Barcelonnette - totally surprised - I was looking for a shortcut between the Col de Sampeyre and Vinadio (without having to slog into Cuneo and back) and didn't expect to hit two relatively high passes en route.

and

Both paved, but more GS type pavement than sportbike (narrow, tight and twisty). The fun part is that they're only about 1,4 Km apart via road.

Colle Esischie isn't even on the list !!
It should be between :
49. Col de Valbelle (Fr) ,2372 m
and :
50. Plateau d'Emperis (Fr) 2362 m
How many more are there ???
( this is becoming very depressing ...)
edit :
correction , it IS mentioned , but together with Colle del Morti and Colle Valcavera

Philip - is there any chance that you could scan the list in and post it here - either as a JPEG or as text? I'd like to compare it with John Hermann's list as well as my personal list.

Thanks

Torque, I'm a bit dissapointed :( A hard core alp tourer like you certainly should have "GROSSER ALPEN STRASSEN F?HRER" in your collection.

North of Acc?gglio, east of Col de Maurin which in turn is east of Col de Vars. Or south of Col d'Agnel if you want.

Even a picture. Hope you like rocks, I wouldn't call it a road ("nichts mehr istand gehaltene" )

EDIT: Oops! Sorry didn't see Ludwig already answered this one.

@Pingvin, I own the Denzel, but my German is so rusty as a WWII Dnjepr's exhaust :(

Which sadly means that I know that these passes exist, but because the book has so much info, and I can't read most of it, this list was great to see.

Besides, I've allready located La Coletta, though it's called Col de l'Autaret in French. Which makes it hard to finf on a Michelin map

Col de Maurin is also known under a different name, Col de Mary.

@Michael, I'll try to do a copy/paste here, don't know if it's gonna work. Don't have a scanner here :?

About 20 of them are in the Pyrenees, some in the Elzas and a few in the Jura. The ones on green I've done, the other ones I may have done by car (like the Pyrenees) or am planning to do.
The list is off course nowhere of beeing complete, but it's what I've done, and am planning of doing in the following years. Possibly that this list will neven be complete 8)

Wow! Impressive (and a whole bunch of names that are totally new to me. I may have to move over there for an entire summer. Or two.

Anyone want to lend me a dirt bike? 250-400cc?

Torque wrote:@Morti (Colle del), Valcavera (Colle), Esischie (Colle d')

Colle Valcavera is interesting - I saw it last night when I installed my new Garmin software on my PC.

It doesn't seem to be marked - It's on the road from Demonte to Colle delle Morti/Fauniera - so I know that I've been there - but I definitely don't recall seeing any signs for it on the way.

What we could do with now is a POI file to import into Sat-Nav and Google Earth - anybody?

I can provide the passes that I've hit in Garmin .GDB and Google Earth .KMZ formats.

Yes please Michael, GDB will be fine. Looking through the list many are either off-road or dead-ends, and some I know of are missing.
Perhaps we should record our own list of 1000m+ surfaced through roads in GDB, POI, KMZ formats.

Here are 141 passes (actually 139 passes and 2 high points) that I have "captured" at the Passh?he.

I would have tossed in a few hotels, but wouldn't want to tread on Karza's toes (especially if he's wearing those ratty loafers).
